Using Drillthrough Filter In Power BI – A Quick Guide

In all the time that I have been using PowerBI, I noted that the reports were always filled up with data and there was little to no space to add details about any sort of entity in the report.

Working on behalf of a Digital Agency in Philadelphia, I got to work on several Business Intelligence projects that used Microsoft PowerBI for data analytics and reporting. Here is how the Drillthrough filter helped me in the custom data visualizations I built.

Say you have a grid in a part of your report into which you want to add details like the email, a long address field, phone number, a long notes field, you would have to keep all that information in a separate report, due to which unfortunately it would not be related to your main report.

With drillthrough in Power Bi Desktop, it is possible to create page that focuses on these specific entities, you can add all the extra information about your customer, your user, your manufacture on a separate page and you can dig into a specific customer/manufacture/user from the main report using drillthrough filter in Power Bi.

To create drillthrough filter, add a page containing all the extra information about a customer/manufacturer etc. Give a nice heading to it, specifying that you are giving extra information about that entity.  Then in the filters pane, you’ll see a drillthrough filter, add a primary key column you want to dig in through from the main report.

This column should be specific to the field you want to filter through, say you want to dig into a customer information, then this should contain a unique primary column, for example, customer id or customer email.

As soon as you add a drillthrough filter PowerBI would automatically add a back button to your report. This button can be changed to any shape you like.

Now in your main report, you can right-click on any of the entities having that same primary key column and you can drillthrough into that report.

This would make it easy for you to dig into the reports and see information about a particular person or object and jump back right into your main report.
